Riverside International Film Festival – 4.11 – 4.20.08

leave a comment »

The Riverside International Film Festival is going on as I type this.  Stop watching The Bad Girls Club marathon and head over to the Regal Theaters at the Plaza to watch the film festival.

Today’s films are:

Tuesday, April 15

  • 11-2:00   Mozlem
  • Beautiful Me(s)
  • 2:15-4:00  H for Hunger
  • 4:15 – 6:00 Beyond the Call
  • 6:15 – 8:00 Passing Poston
  • 8:15-10:55 – Chak De!

Get a little culture and buy a pass for $100, which entitles you to all of the movie screenings. Individual tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, senior and military.

Films have been submitted to our festival from all over the world, including Sweden, Scotland and the Phillipines.  The ones I want to see the most are Limbo Lane – about a man who buries a St. Joseph statue in his yard to sell his house (just like J’s sister!) and Feast of the Assumption: The Otero Family Murders – about Charlie Otero and BTK.

Countdown to Coachella

leave a comment »

Coachella is quickly approaching. Did you get your ticket(s)? I did want to go, especially with the Fox to see Jack Johnson (her heart throb), but single day tickets are sold out. The only thing available is a 3 day pass for $269+ Then you have to consider hotels, food, booze money – a small fortune.

I’ve been to Coachella before, in 2001 and 2003, and although the bands were really good, both times it was hot and dusty and crowded. I didn’t get to see everyone I wanted to see because the sets were overlapping and it was a nightmare trying to navigate through the place. I had a great time both times but I just wasn’t jumping through hoops or going out of my way to get tickets this time, knowing what it would be like. Still, Jack Johnson hardly tours our way and I know the Fox would have loved to see him.

If you go, take pictures and send them my way. And have fun, use a condom and no drinking and driving!

More Va Va Voom Than You Can Handle: Burlesque in the I.E.

leave a comment »

Last weekend was Kitten DeVille and the beautiful Carolina Moon and friends at Back to the Grind. I heard the show was faboo and was sorry I couldn’t make it with my stapled foot and crutches. I will definitely catch the next one.

This weekend, Buckingham Burlesque performs at the Pomona American Legion. I would love to hang out at the American Legion, especially for a burlesque show.

AOL’s city guide for Los Angeles lists their top 11 burlesque attractions, which I thought were all in LA but if you look a little closer, half are in Las Vegas and some in New York.

The best of all is Dita Von Teese. I would love to see her.  She is absolutely beautiful.  She had a local show a while back, which I missed.  I probably broke or injured something back then too.  I’m a regular Johnny Knoxville sometimes.  Anyway, she has a couple of private shows coming up this week, in France and Italy.  She will be in Las Vegas, as a guest judge for the Crazy Horse, March 3rd – 6th.  Who knew that it was so prestigious?  Apparently, it is a BIG deal to be chosen as part of the Crazy Horse dance troupe.  You’ve got to have it all –  formal dance training, a certain look and natural sophistication.  Not sure what all of that means, but then again, I’m not a burlesque dancer.

For all you ever wanted to know about burlesque, get your curvy ass to the Tease-O-Rama convention.  This year’s dates haven’t been announced yet but it was in October/San Francisco last year.  Maybe it will be closer this year.

Friday, 2.22

    Saturday, 2.23

    • Can’t miss this one! Miss Carolina Moon at her debut performance in Kitten De Ville’s Burlesque Revue at Back to the Grind, 9:00 pm for only $15.00. Be there early or you’re not going to get a ticket.
    • Sin City at the Hudson Theater in San Bernardino. Not in Riverside, but close enough. I actually saw a flyer on my lawn and almost drooled. The line up includes trance, house, drum & bass and looks like it could be much fun. Ron D Core will be there. I haven’t seen him in ages.
    • Stormcrow and others at the Showcase Theater in Corona. Can’t beat the $14 dollar price.
    • Soul of the River and The Generation at Faces on Spruce Street. I’ve never been there, never heard either band but it’s in Riverside and its $5. From the Inland Arts site, it looks like it could be good.
    • Heat Music Festival at UCR, with Mos Def, 311 and more.
    • Power and Soul at Lake Alice
    • This is WAYYYY out of Riverside but The Blasters(!!!!!!) and Three Bad Jacks are playing at Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. Worth the drive. Listening to The Blasters right now!
    • The Relentless Brothers feat. Hellbound Eddies at Angel’s Sports Bar in Corona.
    • Donald Wexler, renowned architect, will speak at the Palm Springs Library in celebration of Modernism Week. It’s free but seating is limited. If you’re out in PS for Modernism Week, then be there. He’s the man to see.

So much to do on Saturday!

    Sunday, 2.24

    • Atonement: Sculptures and Constructions is an art exhibit at La Sierra University that goes until March 11th, but the opening reception is Sunday at 6:00 pm.
    • The Oscars! You can start watching the red carpet and Ryan Seacrest on E! sometime in the morning, no actually around noon but jeez, several hours before the ceremonies begin. The actual show begins at 5:30pm on ABC and will be hosted by Jon Stewart for the second year in a row.

    Have a great weekend!

    31st Annual Writers Week 2/5 – 2/9

    with one comment

The 31st Annual Writer’s Week Conference commences this week with a variety of activities for your writing pleasure:

    • Feb 5th: Ed Ochester, Paisley Rekdal and Richard Shelton will read their poetry at UCR** earlier in the day and then host a free panel at the main library tomorrow on American Poetry Now.
    • Feb 6th: History, Biography and Memoir: Amazing True Stories – UCR**
    • Feb 7th: Diaspora: Coming to California – UCR**
    • Feb 8th: California Noir: Mystery in the Palms and Jacaranda – UCR**. Also, the keynote speaker for the event is Joyce Carol Oates.
**Except when noted, all events will be held in the Humanities & Social Sciences Building (HMNSS) Room 1500.

There’s not much at all on UCR’s Writers Week 2008 website unfortunately, but they have a great pdf flyer with all of the Writers Week activities, which is where I got all of this info. If anyone goes to this, send me some pictures to post.

I love writing. I’ve been writing all kinds of stuff (about 3 “first” novels that will never see the light of day, including a 900 page World War II saga, poetry, magazine articles, technical blogs, grant proposals, advanced planning documents, technical documentation) since I was a kid. My mom and dad gave me this ancient manual typewriter that I used to type carbon copy manuscripts and submit to the paper and all kind of journals. In high school and after, I moved up to the good ol’ IBM Selectric, then one of those word processors that you could edit a line or two before it printed. Eventually I got an IBM XT, then a Packard Bell PC and my writing has gotten immensely easier and scarcer. Except for work. I’m writing ALL the time there, all of it succinct and purposeful, and none of it fun and satisfying. Hence this little read but pleasing to me blog. Okay enough about me. Hope all of you writers participating in Writers Week this year have a great time and learn things to perfect your craft.

    Fox Theater Renovation Began 12.5.07

    with one comment

The rear wall of the Fox Theater in Riverside was demolished this morning to kick off the demolishing and renovating of the grand old Fox. “Gone With the Wind” was shown there in ’39, according to the Cinema Treasures write up of the Fox Theater. The comments and posts from that page are a walk through its history. I would have loved to have attended the pre-restoration celebration held back in May and take a peek at how it used to look. But lucky me, it’s going to look exactly like it looked when it first opened in 1929, so I won’t miss a thing. It’s supposed to reopen in December 2008. I’ll be there!

Here’s a link to the rear wall demolition from pe.com: Fox Demolition Video
