Celebrate the 4th Of July!!

leave a comment »

Some places to celebrate the 4th THIS Saturday night (besides our house,  where we will be watching Mt. Rubidoux from the yard):

Pre 4th:  Annual Concert for the Heroes at the Riverside National Cemetery on Thursday, July 2nd at 6:30 pm.

Mt. Rubidoux will be having their annual 4th of July fireworks show at 9 pm so anywhere you have a good view will be the place to be.

Riverside’s 4th of July Spectacular begins at 7 pm at the Riverside Sports Complex.  Admission is $4 and kids under 5 are free.

The Riverside County Fire Department has a pdf with all of the County’s public fireworks shows.  Riverside’s is on Friday, July 3rd from 5 – 9 pm at Agate Park

The Taco Station is having a Fourth of July Classic Car show from 5 – 9, just blocks from Mt. Rubidoux’s fireworks show.  Enjoy great food, nice cars, prizes and Oldies.

66rs game at Arrowhead Park will be having a gigantic fireworks show along with a game against the Lancaster Jethawks.

Calvary Presbyterian Church is having its annual BYO picnic and ice cream social with a great view of Mt. Rubidoux’s fireworks.

White Park is having a free Patriot’s Concert with Riverside Lyric Opera Symphony, the Riverside Master Chorale and more.

Know of any 4th of July activities?  Any restaurants or bars celebrating with specials?  Let us know!

By the way, fireworks are illegal in Riverside County, except for a few desert cities.  This includes firecrackers, “safe and sane” fireworks and even sparklers.

Fourth of July in Riverside

leave a comment »

Lucky Riverside residents.  You have a lot of choices for the Fourth.

Fairmount Park is hosting  the 3rd Annual 4th of July celebration, beginning at 3pm and fireworks going off at 9pm.  It’s free except for the Kid Zone, which is $5 for unlimited play.  The fireworks will be over the lake.

The Fourth of July Spectacular is popping off (get it?) at 9pm the Riverside Sports Complex on Blaine.  This is $4 per person and no ice chests permitted.

There are also firework shows at 9pm at La Sierra Park and Mt. Rubidoux, both free.

No Fireworks in Riverside Co!

What you don’t want to do is light fireworks anywhere in Riverside County.  According to Ordinance 858, everything, including firecrackers and sparklers more than 10 inches, is forbidden.  Well, there are some exceptions, but for the general public like us, they’re just not allowed.  Here are approved fireworks shows in Riverside County.

I can’t wait!

The annual Concert for Heroes is this Thursday night at the Riverside National Cemetery.  The Riverside County Philharmonic will perform at 8 pm in the amphitheater, preceded by other performances at 7:15 pm.  Admission is free and everyone is welcome to come hear the traditional patriotic music and a concert tribute to George M. Cohan.  Great way to kick off a patriotic weekend.

4th of July for Pets

leave a comment »

What are you doing for the Fourth?  A lot of people who I know own dogs will be at home with the TV on REALLY loud.  4th of July is a busy time for animal shelters as dogs become frightened by the noise  The Humane Society has an article on keeping your pets safe, which include:

  • Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays.
  • Do not leave your pet in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects—even death—in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen.
  • Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you’ve removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company while you’re attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations.
  • If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.
  • Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn’t leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.
  • Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

Great advice.  I’d be so upset if Ruby got out and ran away.  But on to other, happier thoughts.  A Riverside County chihuahua meetup group met last Saturday for the 4th of July Celebration Potluck at Limonite Dog Park.  Aww, dogs in patriotic gear makes me cheerful.

Something your doggie will be cheerful about is Holiday Dog Treats, purchased or made on your own.

Happy 4th from Ruby!
