Riverside: The City of Arts And Culture

leave a comment »

The city of Riverside is actively developing a cultural plan, which is hoped will improve the quality of life in the city and leverage the economic impact of arts and culture.

The cultural plan addresses seven arts and culture issue areas:

  1. Branding and marketing Riverside’s arts and culture
  2. University and college connections
  3. Fox Performing Arts Theater
  4. Arts and Cultural festivals and events
  5. Arts education (K – 12)
  6. Funding and resources
  7. City Hall: Organizational Structure to Advance Arts and Culture

The things I’m personally most excited about is bringing back Downtown Wednesday Nights this summer and starting something called the Downtown Street Jam, to be held the second Saturday of every month, beginning in soon.   Voodoo Glow Skulls will be performing April 11th.

Go Riverside!

Riverside International Film Festival – 4.11 – 4.20.08

leave a comment »

The Riverside International Film Festival is going on as I type this.  Stop watching The Bad Girls Club marathon and head over to the Regal Theaters at the Plaza to watch the film festival.

Today’s films are:

Tuesday, April 15

  • 11-2:00   Mozlem
  • Beautiful Me(s)
  • 2:15-4:00  H for Hunger
  • 4:15 – 6:00 Beyond the Call
  • 6:15 – 8:00 Passing Poston
  • 8:15-10:55 – Chak De!

Get a little culture and buy a pass for $100, which entitles you to all of the movie screenings. Individual tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, senior and military.

Films have been submitted to our festival from all over the world, including Sweden, Scotland and the Phillipines.  The ones I want to see the most are Limbo Lane – about a man who buries a St. Joseph statue in his yard to sell his house (just like J’s sister!) and Feast of the Assumption: The Otero Family Murders – about Charlie Otero and BTK.

Fox Theater Renovation Began 12.5.07

with one comment

The rear wall of the Fox Theater in Riverside was demolished this morning to kick off the demolishing and renovating of the grand old Fox. “Gone With the Wind” was shown there in ’39, according to the Cinema Treasures write up of the Fox Theater. The comments and posts from that page are a walk through its history. I would have loved to have attended the pre-restoration celebration held back in May and take a peek at how it used to look. But lucky me, it’s going to look exactly like it looked when it first opened in 1929, so I won’t miss a thing. It’s supposed to reopen in December 2008. I’ll be there!

Here’s a link to the rear wall demolition from pe.com: Fox Demolition Video
