This Weekend: 2.18 – 2.21.10

leave a comment »

First, happy birthday Erick Lange.

What are you doing this weekend? Now that the VDay weekend pressure is over, the gorgeous sunshine we’ve been having is over too.   This weekend’s forecast is rainy Friday and Saturday, with mostly cloudy on Sunday.  Still, there are things to do so here goes:

Thursday,  2.18:

The Bellrays at Back To The Grind.  Free show, all ages. Does this mean B2TG is permitted to have live music again?  Hope so!

Friday, 2.19:

Chinese Treasures from the Time of the Emperors, ongoing until April 2010 at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum.  With such a large Chinatown in Riverside at the turn of the last century, its a wonder why there are not more displays and artifacts from those days.  Maybe this museum event will have more information.

George Jones at Pechanga; Paul Revere and the Raiders at California Performing Arts Theater in San Bernardino;  Ansel Adams at Work at UCR Riverside Fine Arts;  Farmer Boys Cruise Night (Iowa Ave.) from 6 – 9 pm;

Saturday, 2.20:

Raincross 5k Run/Walk at Fairmount Park from 7:30 am – 10:00 am.  The last day to register for the run/walk is this Thursday, 2.18.  Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for children.  Rain or shine, the run is on.

Christopher Cross (Yes! Christopher Cross – guilty pleasure) at California Performing Arts Theater in San Bernardino; THEE one and only DJ Irene at Cafe Sevilla at 10pm

“The Bad Seed” – one of my favorite plays/films is at the Wolfpack Players Theater at 7pm.  Where’s the Wolfpack Players Theater? Its located at MLK High School on Wood Street.

NASCAR Nationwide Series: Stater Brothers 300 is at Fontana Autoclub Speedway.

Sunday, 2.21:

Musink Tattoo and Music Festival 12:00p to 10:00p at the OC Fair and Event Center.  This is a CAN’T MISS with Buzzcocks, The Cult, The Damned and NOFX

What else is going on?  Lemme know by leaving a comment, emailing me at riversideliving at gmail or @me on Twitter at @riversideliving.  I’m there for ya! 🙂

Open Mic Nights

leave a comment »

A friend just called a second ago,  thinking I’d know where there are open mic nights in Riverside.  I don’t play anything, sing anything so I didn’t really think to ever find out.  But now that the question has been asked, I had to find out.

Here’s a list of open mic nights within 25 miles of the zipcode 92507.  It’s Friday night, so it looks like the Plum House (2 blocks down the street) for my friend.

Blues Brothers at San Manuel: 2.18.10

leave a comment »

It is NOT too late to get your Blues Brothers tickets for tomorrow’s show.  The Blues Brothers, starring Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi are not to be missed.  The Blues Brothers started on SNL, with Dan and the late John Belushi – as Jake and Ellwood –  which turned into a couple of movies and a long lasting musical act.  They are appearing all over the place, but right in YOUR neighborhood tomorrow.

Since We’re Talking Music: Coachella 4.16 – 4.18.10

leave a comment »

The most sought after – and crowded, hot and overpriced – show is coming up fast.  As jaded as I may sound, I really want to go.  The maddening thing is that there are artists on EACH day that I want to see, so if I were to have to pick just one day to go to, it would be quite difficult.  Since I have a fukt up ankle in a cast, I’m thinking the day that would be easiest to navigate.  At least to the Heineken tent.  That said, YOU tell me which would be the best day to go.  Here’s the flyer:

I guess I’m thinking Friday.  I’ve never seen JayZ or Them Crooked Vultures.

The 48 Hour Film Project: IE

with 3 comments

What a cool idea!  The 48 Hour Film Project gave local filmmakers 48 hours to record and edit a film to submit to the project.  The theme for this project, which was filmed last weekend in the IE, was a Western.  Filmmakers had to include certain elements and film here in the IE, then submit their entries by August 9th.  Premieres were last night and tonight (August 12th & 13) at Ultra Star University.

Broadway In Riverside

leave a comment »

Are you ready for the Inaugural Season of The Fox Performing Arts Center?  Driving past the Fox every day, from the outside it doesn’t appear as though much is going on.  Inside, the original interior paint is being restored and the whole place is being restored to its 1929 grandeur.  Sounds swell.

There are already several big performances planned for 2010.  Annie in February; Jesus Christ Superstar in March and April, and Hairspray in April to start.  If you check out the various season ticket plans, the prices are reasonable if you are expecting a great show.  For example, you and a friend could see all of the above shows plus two more for about 170.00.  I’d love to see Annie again.  I haven’t seen it since the whole Annie/Andrea McArdle craze when I was in 5th grade.  Its about time.

Don’t forget to check out Inhale at Lake Alice on Wednesday nights. They get everyone up and dancing with their own songs and tunes from bands like Sublime. Drink prices were decent too. Greyhound with Grey Goose = 5.50. Get over here.

Ska In The (Billiards) Park

leave a comment »

by Jessika Pedersen

Over the weekend, Riverside got a dose of their first annual Ska in the Park (@QBonkers). It was hot and crowded, and the location changed across town to a local pool hall, but none of this stopped local Southern California ska kids from showing up and packing the small building and parking lot. The local band turnout was a great opportunity to see smaller bands from other areas. A couple of my personal favorites were Maxwell Smart and Dr. Skavra (who sound like early Aquabats before they turned into a kid band). Our local band The B Sharps was amazing as usual. Suburban Legends played a great song off their first record, Gummi Bears. Though they needed a bigger main stage, for a first Annual ska festival in Riverside, I have to say it was a lot of fun. I can’t wait until next year. Ska is not dead, at least not in Riverside.

Riverside: The City of Arts And Culture

leave a comment »

The city of Riverside is actively developing a cultural plan, which is hoped will improve the quality of life in the city and leverage the economic impact of arts and culture.

The cultural plan addresses seven arts and culture issue areas:

  1. Branding and marketing Riverside’s arts and culture
  2. University and college connections
  3. Fox Performing Arts Theater
  4. Arts and Cultural festivals and events
  5. Arts education (K – 12)
  6. Funding and resources
  7. City Hall: Organizational Structure to Advance Arts and Culture

The things I’m personally most excited about is bringing back Downtown Wednesday Nights this summer and starting something called the Downtown Street Jam, to be held the second Saturday of every month, beginning in soon.   Voodoo Glow Skulls will be performing April 11th.

Go Riverside!

Inland Idol is Back

The children’s singing competition is back for another year.  Last year 500+ children tried out for a chance to win prizes such as professional recording and photography and performance opportunities.  Does your kid have talent?   The first audition is March 7th in Corona.  Registration is $35 and the contestants should have a 30 to 60 second segment of a song to sing acapella.  Song choices must be “family/age appropriate” and cannot contain bad language.  According to the posted rules, songs can be any genre except rap.

Corona: 10 a.m. March 7, The Promenade Shops at Dos Lagos, 2780 Cabot Drive

Temecula: 10 a.m. March 14, The Promenade in Temecula, 40820 Winchester Road

Chino Hills: 10 a.m. March 28, The Shoppes at Chino Hills, 13920 City Center Drive

Jessica Simpson Loves The I.E.

Jessica Simpson singing at San Manuel Bingo and Casino, originally uploaded by emmisgossip.

Last month, Jess debuted her country album to the Inland Empire when she appeared at San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino. Today, she was at Patriot High School in Jurupa after the school won a contest sponsored by local country station KFROG and the U.S. Army.  Patriot students sent 5,067 texts to win her appearance.

Where will Jess show up next?  My bets are on Pepitos or InCahoots.
