Open Mic Nights

leave a comment »

A friend just called a second ago,  thinking I’d know where there are open mic nights in Riverside.  I don’t play anything, sing anything so I didn’t really think to ever find out.  But now that the question has been asked, I had to find out.

Here’s a list of open mic nights within 25 miles of the zipcode 92507.  It’s Friday night, so it looks like the Plum House (2 blocks down the street) for my friend.

Blues Brothers at San Manuel: 2.18.10

leave a comment »

It is NOT too late to get your Blues Brothers tickets for tomorrow’s show.  The Blues Brothers, starring Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi are not to be missed.  The Blues Brothers started on SNL, with Dan and the late John Belushi – as Jake and Ellwood –  which turned into a couple of movies and a long lasting musical act.  They are appearing all over the place, but right in YOUR neighborhood tomorrow.

Since We’re Talking Music: Coachella 4.16 – 4.18.10

The most sought after – and crowded, hot and overpriced – show is coming up fast.  As jaded as I may sound, I really want to go.  The maddening thing is that there are artists on EACH day that I want to see, so if I were to have to pick just one day to go to, it would be quite difficult.  Since I have a fukt up ankle in a cast, I’m thinking the day that would be easiest to navigate.  At least to the Heineken tent.  That said, YOU tell me which would be the best day to go.  Here’s the flyer:

I guess I’m thinking Friday.  I’ve never seen JayZ or Them Crooked Vultures.

Old Friends & Good Tunes This Sat at The Plaza

Don’t miss renowned artists, and local cats, Ralph Torres and Mike Geoghegan, this month at the Riverside Plaza.

Stolen verbatim from Mr. Torres bio:

Ralph Torres — songwriter/vocalist/keyboardist — is the purveyor of a distinguished brand of power pop with songs suspended on irresistible hooks, kinetic grooves and meticulously memorable choruses.

RalphA native of the Inland Empire, Torres is well-known to Southern California audiences through his history with bands including ska/reggae favorites, The Sedans, and a subsequent chain of original pop and acoustic projects. In the late Nineties he founded (actual size), a duo whose solid songwriting and energetic performances won them resounding accolades, opening slots for The Eagles and Linda Ronstadt, and a nomination for the National Academy of Songwriters Acoustic Group of the Year.

Following the group’s dissolution, Torres, a multi-disciplinary artist who includes web design and photography among his talents — retreated to write songs and reconfigure his musical future. An avid student of popular culture, his mastery of on-line media connected him to music makers worldwide. He was invited to participate in Music Bridges, a confab of international hit songwriters, in Goslar, Germany along with U.S. representatives including Motown legend, Lamont Dozier. In a 500 year-old hotel, Torres collaborated and produced songs, and was ultimately featured in a sold-out concert at the World’s Fair.

Returning stateside, he resumed work on a long-anticipated solo project and pledged his efforts to the Southern California and Inland Empire Songwriters Associations. Through these organizations, Torres met recording artist John McGill, with whom he now partners in select venues in a duo, Mostly Harmless, performing material by both artists as well as new songs the duo are writing in tandem.

Solo, in a duo, or fronting a rocking band, Ralph Torres’ calling card is his enthusiasm. Clearly not a shy guy or reticent performer, his masterful songwriting — divined from his thesaurus of influences and sung with a fiery conviction — illuminates a prime pop sensibility with joyous electricity.
