Sunday Art Scene: 2.19.09
Russian art expert Margaret Samu will be speaking this Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the Mission Inn’s Spanish Art Gallery. Ms. Samu, a Fullbright Fellow to Russia, will be discussing the Inn’s collection of Russian masterpieces. The Spanish Art Gallery is currently home of Russian pieces Ilya Repin’s “Portrait of Madame K” and Vereschagin’s “Charge up San Juan Hill”.
A Jewish Film Festival will be held at the University Village Cinema in Riverside, beginning at 1:30 PM. The festival, sponsored by Temple Beth El, will run four films that portray Jewish life. Tickets are $6 per film, or $20 for all.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is appearing at the California Performing Arts Theater in San Bernardino, starting at 3:00 PM. Swing never gets old.
Now this next event is considered art by some, so I’m including it. The Auto Club Speedway in Fontana presents the Auto Club 500. This is considered the West Coast premiere of NASCAR. “Band From TV”, a musical group which includes “House”‘s Hugh Laurie and Jesse Spencer and “Desperate Housewives”‘ Teri Hatcher, will be performing before the Auto Club 500 race kicks off.
What’s your art scene like? I want to see it!

Riverside police on Monday cited a crew removing dirt and other materials from the site of the city's second Chinatown, where developer Doug Jacobs is planning to construct a medical office building.
Storm Watch, Polygamy & Other Local News
Currently, it is pouring! Rain blew in this morning and is expected to last through Tuesday, with lows in the mid 30’s.
That did not stop protesters from demonstrating on Tequesquite and Brockton against the Chinatown site development this afternoon. Although the battle over this development has been going on for some time, work began last Saturday morning. No construction has begun yet, according to the developer Doug Jacobs. Workers are uncovering the site, under the guidance of three anthropologists. The Save Our Chinatown Committee has requested a restraining order to prevent the development from continuing. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. Last Tuesday, the City Council unanimously approved an excavation plan from Jacobs.
A 55 year old polygamist was sentenced to seven life terms by a Riverside County Superior Court judge last Friday, for abusing his children and wives. His trial came to an end 10 years after his arrest in 1999. One of his three wives alerted the authorities to the man’s extreme abuse by slipping a thirteen page letter to a postal clerk. The family of nineteen children and three wives lived in Murrieta and collected public assistance.
A man wanted in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, was apprehended this weekend as he was coming back across the border in San Ysidro. Jeffrey Berrouet, 23, was going to be profiled on America’s Most Wanted and was wanted for a homicide warrant and a controlled substance warrant. He is accused of participating in the murder of Robert Mastrangelo, a rapper from the I.E. underground hip hop movement.
Stay warm and dry!
Riverside Celebrates Black History
Sunny skies prevailed and not a drop of rain was in sight today as Riverside celebrated Black History month downtown. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Black History Committee of Riverside‘s parade and expo.
This year’s theme was Celebrating the Arts and Culture of Riverside.

Tens of thousands of jobs would be created or saved throughout Inland Southern California by a federal stimulus plan aimed at easing deep economic woes, but officials are uncertain when and how that help will arrive.
Let’s Go To the Desert
Two things (that I know of) are beginning today in the desert area.
Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival kicks off today in Indio. It runs from February 13th – 22nd. With events like the Blessing of the Dates and Loverboy and Gin Blossoms, it promises to be fun. I love fairs. It means fair food and fair beer.
Modernism Week in Palm Springs also begins today and runs until February 21st. Palm Springs has some of the most beautiful examples of modernist architecture and has taken great pride and pains to preserve these gems. Hopefully the weather will warm up a little so I can take a tour and post some pictures of these gorgeous buildings.

Rainy Riverside
Brr, its cold and rainy. I was wrong when I said a couple of weeks ago that it was the end of winter. It is currently 52 degrees and expected to stay cold and rainy all weekend long. So much for the yard sale this weekend.

Etta James: Beef With Beyonce?
Riverside resident and famed singer Etta James’ threats to whip Beyonce’s ass were “just a joke”. The Woodcrest resident made fun of the President’s ears and threatened to whip B, in comments made during a January 31st concert in Canada. This was after B sang “At Last”, Etta’s signature song, at the Inaugural Ball. Ms. James says she is a comedian as well as a singer and she was just joking.
Inland County Budget News
Busy day for Riverside County. Our board of supervisors voted to sue the State in order to force it to pay billions of dollars it owes the County and relieve the County of the obligation to pay for the services the money is owed for, if the state doesn’t come through.
What are the proposed layoffs and cutbacks for Riverside County programs going to impact?
It is already impacting the Depts of Mental Health and Public Health. The state already withheld payment of $5million combined for those programs. The Dept of Mental Health has already cut back on staff and is considering closing 3 clinics, and cutting back on adult services, affecting 2,400 patients.
San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors is considering stripping county funded benefits currently provided to Superior Court judges, who are state employees, saving about $1.5 million.
Inspite of drastic efforts to save money, the city of Colton may have to begin laying off its employees. Like many counties and agencies, they implemented a hiring freeze, salary freeze, and offered early retirement incentives in order to avoid layoffs.
Corona is selling its police helicopter. San Bernardino is preparing to cut 130 jobs, including 29 police officers and 10 firefighters.
Employees are waiting to see how this will affect them as well, expecting layoffs, alternate schedules, voluntary or mandatory furloughs and ways of giving back to the County while maintaining their own lives. In the last Board budget meeting, there was mention of denying raises, changing schedules to 4/10 or syncronized 9/80, changing retirement program so that no one can retire at more than 100% of their pay. A Corona-Norco school superintendent has given 25k of his 250k salary back to the district to help fund other positions.
Enough depressing news. I should rename this as “BUDGET CRISIS 2009” (as in tv news’ STORM WATCH and such) but its too serious to make light of in any way. Its hitting very close to home for me and my co-workers.
Bloody Tuesday?
San Bernardino and Riverside Counties both laying off workers. Very sad.
Riverside must lay off 200 – 250 employees to balance this year’s and next year’s budget. Departments cutting jobs are Animal Services, Public Health and the Assessors Office, as well as others. So far, Department of Public Social Services has laid off any permanent positions.

Riverside A National Hot Spot
At least weather-wise. It was 80 degrees today and gorgeous. I just heard on Fox 11 that it was one of the warmest spots in the nation today. Yay us. I spent my day either sleeping, eating, drinking or laughing. We had a Super Bowl party with the family. God knows how many things I ate and beers I drank. Lots of fun. The weather is going to be great all week, with highs at least 79 degrees. I hope it lasts until next weekend so we can barbeque.
Did your team win today? I was rooting for the underdog and so were most of us who were over today. I’ve quickly forgotten about their loss. Now its all about the Lakers. Next game is tomorrow at 7:30 and we’re already planning a get together for that game or the one later this week.
Have a great Monday!
