When Installing A New OS

The first things I do:

• Turn on firewall
• Change the display settings
• Install Firefox and make it robust
• Install Avast Anti-Virus
• Install my favorite extensions: View in I.E., Adblock, NoScript, TwitterFox, etc.
• Install Power Tweak
• Install my bookmarklets for WordPress, Vodpod, etc. 

That’s on a Windows computer.  Completely different story for Linux.  And I wish I had any experience with Macs.
