Dangerous river conditions are not isolated to the Santa Ana River, where signs are posted warning people to be cautious of sinkholes and bogs of soft soil after rains, Riverside County Senior Park Ranger John Vint said.
"You can find bogs just about anywhere after a heavy rain. If the water has nowhere to go, it sits there for quite a while," Vint said.

Officially Now A Quake Swarm?
More quakes were felt in the Redlands area today, 11 of them – all under 3.0 – from morning until 6:45 pm. A few days ago, the aftershocks were not considered a quake:
Caltech geologist Erik Pounders said it’s hard to define a swarm.
“Swarm has a lot of connotations, and it’s not quite clear what it means,” Pounders said. But he agreed, “This is definitely not a swarm.”
Although seismologists are saying that the recent quake swarm are just letting us know stress is building up underground, its beginning to feel like we need to have more than that stray bottle of Sparkletts and canned carrots just in case.
Downtown Street Jam is Back: 3.13.10

This Weekend: 2.18 – 2.21.10
First, happy birthday Erick Lange.
What are you doing this weekend? Now that the VDay weekend pressure is over, the gorgeous sunshine we’ve been having is over too. This weekend’s forecast is rainy Friday and Saturday, with mostly cloudy on Sunday. Still, there are things to do so here goes:
Thursday, 2.18:
The Bellrays at Back To The Grind. Free show, all ages. Does this mean B2TG is permitted to have live music again? Hope so!
Friday, 2.19:
Chinese Treasures from the Time of the Emperors, ongoing until April 2010 at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum. With such a large Chinatown in Riverside at the turn of the last century, its a wonder why there are not more displays and artifacts from those days. Maybe this museum event will have more information.
George Jones at Pechanga; Paul Revere and the Raiders at California Performing Arts Theater in San Bernardino; Ansel Adams at Work at UCR Riverside Fine Arts; Farmer Boys Cruise Night (Iowa Ave.) from 6 – 9 pm;
Saturday, 2.20:
Raincross 5k Run/Walk at Fairmount Park from 7:30 am – 10:00 am. The last day to register for the run/walk is this Thursday, 2.18. Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for children. Rain or shine, the run is on.
Christopher Cross (Yes! Christopher Cross – guilty pleasure) at California Performing Arts Theater in San Bernardino; THEE one and only DJ Irene at Cafe Sevilla at 10pm
“The Bad Seed” – one of my favorite plays/films is at the Wolfpack Players Theater at 7pm. Where’s the Wolfpack Players Theater? Its located at MLK High School on Wood Street.
NASCAR Nationwide Series: Stater Brothers 300 is at Fontana Autoclub Speedway.
Sunday, 2.21:
Musink Tattoo and Music Festival 12:00p to 10:00p at the OC Fair and Event Center. This is a CAN’T MISS with Buzzcocks, The Cult, The Damned and NOFX
What else is going on? Lemme know by leaving a comment, emailing me at riversideliving at gmail or @me on Twitter at @riversideliving. I’m there for ya!
Open Mic Nights
A friend just called a second ago, thinking I’d know where there are open mic nights in Riverside. I don’t play anything, sing anything so I didn’t really think to ever find out. But now that the question has been asked, I had to find out.
Here’s a list of open mic nights within 25 miles of the zipcode 92507. It’s Friday night, so it looks like the Plum House (2 blocks down the street) for my friend.
Earthquake!
Another series of earthquake just occurred at about 11:57 am this morning, centered about 3 miles SSW of Redlands. The magnitudes were 3.3; 3.4 and 3.3. These come after several shocks felt around the same area since last weekend.
Insert obligatory public service announcement here: Now would be a good time to make sure you are prepared for The Big One™ while it is just Little Ones. Check out the USGS page for preparation tips. And check on your neighbors. They will probably be the ones to help you after a major quake.

Be flexible!
Magnolia Valet: Your Guide to Local and Independent Businesses In Riverside
MagnoliaValet.com is the best idea I have seen for promoting local Riverside businesses and actually giving residents a tangible opportunity to put their dollars into the community in which they live. Keeping your money circulating within your neighborhood businesses is a direct investment in your town, an investment in a business that has a personal stake in your local economic success.
Take a look at the local businesses listed on MagnoliaValet – there are plenty in many categories – and consider what purchases for goods or services you can make. The advantages are multiple: support in your city, shopping or services close to your home or business and the opportunity your business can also take advantage of and generate sales and the good will of other locals.
If you are a local independent business, you are eligible for a complimentary listing. Take advantage of this opportunity for your community AND your business.

Suicidal Pilot Has Inland Connections
A suicidal man who set fire to his home, stole a plane and crashed into the IRS building in Austin, TX this morning was an Inland area resident/business owner in the 80’s and 90’s. The pilot Joseph Stack owned two businesses, including one in Corona. He was also married at one time to a Hemet woman.
Joseph Stack posted a 36 paragraph missive about his reasons for his actions, blaming the economy and government, amongst other issues, written in the rambling way suicides sometimes do to their guaranteed audience. (Not making a judgement – just an observation).

The Ultimate Oscar Party Guide
Some film lovers really see the Academy Awards night as a holiday, something worthy of a full fledged party. I am sometimes one of those persons. Because of my aforementioned effed up ankle, I’m not so sure what’s on the schedule for my house.
However, if you filmies want to throw a faboo Oscar themed party, I’m going to compile the best ideas that I can find. If you have some ideas of your own, send me compromising pictures, menus, games and anything else Oscar themed. I’m dying to see what killer costumes people have for Sherlock Holmes or Coraline.
First, you have to have your printable ballot that your guests can mark their choices and compare the actual winners with. You can give out some crazy prizes or if you’re in a boozy, Hollywood type of mood, have everyone take some kinda glitzy Goldschläger shot. The awesome, official Oscar printable ballot is here. Make use of it. It will be the highlight of your party.
A themed cocktail is also important to the festivities. The site thatsthespirit.com has a couple of star struck drinks that will get your guests extra joyous, except your recovering cousin who should have an equally fun but non alcoholic drink on the menu. The drinks are a little “past Oscar”-esque but there’s ideas for food and drinks so take from it what you will and just rink up. Everyone likes a drunk Oscar party.
BusyBeelifestyle.com lists a few Oscar worthy drinks:
As suggested in InStyle magazine. Serves 10.
- 1 1/2c. Bacardi Coco rum
- 1 1/2c. pineapple juice
- 3/4c. brandy
- 1/2c. sweetened coconut cream
- 2 tsp. almond extract
Combine all ingredients and chill. Serve in ice filled glasses and garnish with pineapples and cherries.
As suggested in InStyle magazine. Serves 12.
- 4c. tangerine or orange juice
- 1/4c. Rose’s sweetened lime juice
- 1c. vodka
- 12 T. boysenberry or blackberry syrup
- 1 bottle chilled champagne
- lime slices or blackberries for garnish
Combine the juices and vodka in a large pitcher. Fill 12 rock glasses with ice and 1 T. syrup. Fill the glasses with the juice/vodka mixture. Top with champagne and garnish with limes and berries.
Evite.com has an Oscar party from start to finish including photo evites to mail out to your guests, to attire, games, food and the works. Here’s a sample of a photo evite:

A 3.2-magnitude earthquake shook Redlands on Tuesday evening, but there were no reports of damage or injury.
-
Before crashing his city-issued car last week, Riverside police Chief Russ Leach spent several hours drinking at an area strip club but appeared "fine" when he left, an attorney for the club said Tuesday.
The California Highway Patrol has obtained copies of surveillance footage at Club 215 in Colton that shows Leach arriving shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday and leaving after the club closed, at 1:48 a.m., said Roger Jon Diamond.
Mark Your Calendars: 2.25.10 – Benefit to help Simple Simon’s Employees
A fundraiser to benefit 25 people who lost their jobs as a result of the fire at Simple Simon’s is being held Thursday, 2.25 at 6:30 pm near the restaurant. Wine and cheese and two bands will liven up the night for the fundraiser. The suggested donation is $20.
Blues Brothers at San Manuel: 2.18.10
It is NOT too late to get your Blues Brothers tickets for tomorrow’s show. The Blues Brothers, starring Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi are not to be missed. The Blues Brothers started on SNL, with Dan and the late John Belushi – as Jake and Ellwood – which turned into a couple of movies and a long lasting musical act. They are appearing all over the place, but right in YOUR neighborhood tomorrow.
Since We’re Talking Music: Coachella 4.16 – 4.18.10
The most sought after – and crowded, hot and overpriced – show is coming up fast. As jaded as I may sound, I really want to go. The maddening thing is that there are artists on EACH day that I want to see, so if I were to have to pick just one day to go to, it would be quite difficult. Since I have a fukt up ankle in a cast, I’m thinking the day that would be easiest to navigate. At least to the Heineken tent. That said, YOU tell me which would be the best day to go. Here’s the flyer:
I guess I’m thinking Friday. I’ve never seen JayZ or Them Crooked Vultures.
It Just Gets Worse: Riverside police chief had visited strip club prior to wreck
Prior to wrecking his city issued vehicle, ex Riverside police chief Russ Leach spent several hours drinking at…
Club 215!
Seriously, of all places. I’ve spent a couple hours there myself – after work happy hours and all – but I’ve never driven off in my government paid for ride – a fly ride at that – mixing my booze, scantily clad honeys and prescription pills that culminated in one effed up vehicle.
Club 215. I kind of don’t blame him – well, yes I do – because how many times have YOU taken a peek at the building to see who was hanging out on the balcony having a cigarette in lingerie. Admit it. You know you do.
Wow.
